What affects the cost of concrete cutting?
The method, amount of cutting and site setup all affect the price. A drawing gives us the opening dimensions, but it may not show how equipment reaches the work area or how the cut concrete will be removed. Those details belong in the enquiry too.
Opening size and concrete thickness
For core drilling, list the diameter, depth and number of holes. For saw cutting, give the length and depth of each cut or the dimensions of each opening. Tell us if the thickness is confirmed or estimated.
Reinforcement and the condition of the concrete affect the cutting plan. Share structural drawings where available. If the concrete is post-tensioned, identify it in the enquiry so the proposed openings can be reviewed with the structural engineer.
Choice of cutting method
Wall sawing handles straight cuts up to 730mm deep. Floor and road sawing suits joints, trenches and slab sections. Diamond wire sawing is available for thick sections or work where blade access is restricted.
A job may need more than one method. For example, a wall opening may need core holes at its corners as well as saw cuts. We review the drawing before deciding what to include.
Access and setup
Tell us the floor level and whether a lift, ramp or crane is available. Photos should show the route to the work area as well as the concrete itself. Restricted access can affect equipment selection and the number of setups needed.
Include details of available power, water and drainage. For occupied buildings, explain how the work area can be separated from visitors or tenants, and whether nearby finishes need protection.
Scanning and structural review
GPR scanning is available on customer request. Tell us whether you want scanning included and whether a previous scan report exists. Scan findings help identify embedded objects; the structural engineer still needs to review the proposed openings and any changes to them.
For post-tensioned elements, agree the investigation and cutting plan with the engineer before work begins. A quote should state what scanning and reporting are included so the scope is clear.
Section removal and waste
Cutting an opening and removing the concrete are separate parts of the job. Confirm who will support and lift the section, where it can be placed and who will remove it from site. Include slurry collection and protection of finished areas in the scope.
Working hours and permits
Share the permitted work times, site induction requirements and permit arrangements. An occupied office or a restricted industrial site may have short work windows. We need those details before confirming the programme.
How should you compare quotations?
Compare the same scope. Check opening quantities, thickness assumptions, scanning, access equipment, section removal and cleanup. Ask each contractor to identify exclusions and explain how changes to the drawings will be priced.
A lower total can reflect less work included. Read the exclusions before deciding, especially where lifting, waste removal or work outside normal site hours is involved.
